In my position of GMR, I announce the following rules clarifications, effective
7/22/03:
(1) When Entangle, Iceball, Petrify or Flesh to Stone strike the equipment of a
target enchanted with Protection from Magic, there is no
effect and the spellball is discharged harmlessly. Discussion -
These spells effect a person, not their gear. Hits to
equipment simply determine when the target is effected. Thus, when the
target is effected by a hit to his gear, Protection from Magic will
protect him.
(2) When Sphere of Annihilation is blocked with a weapon or shield, it only
effects that weapon or shield. The person using it is not
destroyed. Discussion - According to IRCA (which Iron Mountains is a
part of), Sphere does not have any abilities not enumerated it its spell
description. Effecting a the user because the spellball touched their
shield or sword, as we see from spells like Entangle, Petrify, et al.,
is a specifically enumerated ability not present in Sphere of Annihilation.
Effective 4/1/2004
Clarifications:
(1) When using the spell Flight, using verbal spells that require a wand does
not end the flight spell, so long as the arms are still
flapped and occasional screeching sound made. Spells like Fireball would
end the Flight.
(2) When a victim is Yielded, he or she must 'lower his arms' and 'surrender'.
This would preclude almost any aggressive action, such as
attacking the caster's teammates, etc.
Rules Reminders:
(1) When judging hits to the feet by melee weapons, the distinction is not
whether or not the foot was lifted. It is whether the foot is
being used block a blow that would have otherwise hit the combatant.
(Page 12, Notes 2) Unless someone starts trying to abuse this, foot
shots from melee weapons are almost never hits.
(2) Outside of items specific to a spell (spell balls, strips, wands, etc), the
three things a magic user needs to cast magics are (1)
appropriate class garb, (2) a list of the magics and (3) a spell book or scroll.
(Rules of Magic 10, Magic Clarifications 18.) More
descriptive lists of magics, which include incantations, ranges, effects, etc,
are all encouraged but not required. The spell book or
scroll is a game object, and need not convey any information.
(3) Player Invulnerability (Stoneskin) and Monster Invulnerability are
different. When a player is targeted by a verbal magic, the caster
must specify what are is hit (Rules of Magic 23). However, when a monster
is targeted by a verbal magic, it defaults to the torso
location unless it is area specific, like Wounding. (Dor Un Avathar, pg
5.)

1) Thrown weapons hitting a foot on the
ground do not count.
A previous ruling to the reverse of this rule could not be supported by any
rules or clarifications that could be found.
2) As in the past I am upholding local
preferences. If you take a leg shot you may choose to put it up or down.
However, if your dead leg is up you may not use it to move. That leg is dead for
all purposes. If you wish to use it to help you move then please go to both legs
or place it down and use your good leg to maneuver.
I plan on being a hard ass over this. I have been against the "dead leg
up" for a long time. However, since we have played it this way for awhile I
will continue, I just plan on making it more of a challenge for those that wish
to take advantage of this.

1) two reeves are required to run a tournament. I have said this
in
the interest of fairness to the participants.
2) if your weapon does 4 bazillion, and you don't call it, its only
worth one. if it is a siege, call siege. if it is poisoned, call
poison. if it is wounds kill, then call wounds kill. if it.... you
get the point. your opponent should know what your weapon does by
looking at it, however, we are not all reeve qualified (much to my
dismay), so not everyone will know.
3) due to warmer clothes for the winter months, many may feel that
people are sloughing, when in fact, it is a garb shot. please bear this
in mind, and if you want to be courteous, let them know it was a garb
shot.
